Big news (well for me anyway) – my local Ulta has finally started carrying ColourPop products! I really haven’t written much at all about ColourPop before, besides a much earlier post I did on their interesting business history. I never really experimented with many of their products before as for the most part they are an e-commerce brand. (I’m not a huge online makeup shopper; I think to swatch, play and see colors IRL before shelling money out.) While their partnership with Ulta was announced a few years ago, I had given up all hope as the years ticked by with no sign of the brand anywhere in stores near me. But then last month, voila, an end-cap display! Joy! Of course, I had to pick up a few little bits in celebration so I want to talk a bit about the ColourPop Super Shock formula today.
Full disclosure: this is not my first time at the rodeo with either ColourPop or the Super Shock formula. Years ago my mom treated me to a now discontinued collaboration set that they did with beauty influencer Kathleen Lights. It included four Super Shock Shadows, but only half of them survived decluttering. I liked using them well enough, but I never really connected with them (as crazy as that sounds) or gave them enough attention in my routine. Perhaps at the time I was just more interested in other products, I’m not sure.
So in this post, I’m going to disregard those earlier purchases and just focus on the newer items in my collection. I’ll talk a little about the texture of the Super Shock products if you’re unfamiliar with what they are, and then go into the colors I recently bought.

THE COLOURPOP SUPER SHOCK FORMULA – WHAT IS IT?
ColourPop describes the Super Shock formula as “A vibrant and creamy formula that delivers maximum payout for an intense look…a creme-powder pigment with a unique bouncy texture delivers maximum pigmentation…in one swipe without creasing, fading or fallout.”
They offer this formula in eyeshadows, blushes and highlighters; I’ve never tried any of the blushes, I should say.
ColourPop Super Shock Highlighter in Smoke n’ Whistles
It’s a really unique texture in that it’s creamy to pick up and apply, but as you start blending it out across the eye or cheek it becomes powdery and sets for long-wear. I use my fingers exclusively when both applying and blending these products, since I prefer that method when using creams. I’m sure you could also try using a flat brush as well.
I can certainly attest to the long-wear of the Super Shock formula. I hardly ever notice any creasing or fading throughout the day on my eyes or cheeks; I never use a primer on my eyes before applying them either. I’m not always a fan of cream-to-powder formulas since they can catch and become a bit dry on my already-dry skin. However, the ColourPop Super Shock formula strikes a perfect balance between cream and powder in my opinion.
They’re just a joy to use and apply, and they come in dozens of colors and finishes. And at the time of writing this post there seems to be a 40% sale on all Super Shock products, which is insane! The eyeshadows are only $3.60 right now on ColourPop’s website – craziness! I’m sure it won’t last long, so if you’re interested get on that quickly!
SUPER SHOCK SHADOW IN SAILOR
I’m totally in love with this color! It’s a oyster-kinda shade with very fine blue/green and silver glitter flecks. Totally gorgeous. Unfortunately I couldn’t quite capture all the multi-dimensional effects in these photos, but trust me they’re there! Since this does contain glitter you may notice a little fall-out throughout the day but nothing too obvious or offensive. Just make sure not to rub your eyes while you wear it, otherwise you’ll have a hot mess on your hands!

SUPER SHOCK HIGHLIGHTER IN SMOKE N’ WHISTLES
This was actually the first product I bought when I noticed the ColourPop display at Ulta. I was initially looking for Flexitarian or Lunch Money, two shades that have gotten a lot of hype over the years with bloggers and influencers. Both colors were out-of-stock in store, so I picked up Smoke n’ Whistles instead. I was immediately attracted to its pinky champagne tone, and I’m sooo happy I ended up getting it.
It has a beautiful silver pearl shift to it, and I’ve used it as both an eyeshadow and a highlighter. I have to say, I probably prefer it as a shadow since the pearl can be a little obvious on my cheeks at times. For reference, it’s definitely a bit chunkier than the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector or the Ohii Wake Up Pen in Pearl. But the texture is super smooth, even smoother than the Super Shock Shadow. It doesn’t fade at all throughout the day, but I did notice a tiny bit of creasing on my eyes when I used it as a shadow. No big deal though.
