Review: CoverGirl Clean Liquid Foundation

Hi friends!

Well, it’s review time. Back in December you may remember that I visited the CoverGirl flagship store in NYC, and snagged a few products for free (read the full story by clicking the first link below); I’m very lucky that the Clean Liquid Foundation was one of them. I’ve been testing this formula out since then so I’m ready to present you with my thoughts & opinions now! So let’s get into it.

(Just FYI, this is not about the matte/oil-free or the sensitive skin versions.)

Read this: I went to the new CoverGirl flagship store in NYC!

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Let your natural beauty shine through with COVERGIRL Clean Liquid Makeup! Clean Makeup’s water-based foundation noncomedogenic formula lets your skin breathe, goes on easily, and blends perfectly, so the world doesn’t see makeup, just the look of great skin. COVERGIRL Clean Liquid Makeup is also available in Sensitive Skin and Oil Control formulas.

PRODUCT BENEFITS

Water based foundation. Goes on easily and blends perfectly. Available in matte and sensitive formulas.

HOW I Apply THIS PRODUCT

I like to dab medium-sized dots of this on the areas I want coverage (generally around the T-zone), and then blend in circular motions with my fingers. I like my base products to appear and feel as skin-like as possible. I have not tried applying this with a brush. I do not set this foundation with powder (it’s winter and I already have dry skin, so that ain’t happenin’!).

MY THOUGHTS ON PACKAGING

Packaging of CoverGirl Clean Liquid Foundation

The glass bottle is small & dainty with no pump. Definite pro’s & con’s here. I like the fact that it’s small but still holds 30 mL; the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue holds just 5 mL more but is much bigger, for example. It’s also easy to store on your vanity at this size. However, it’s glass so you can’t really travel with it or toss it in your handbag if you wanted to. And no pump = more mess. I will always prefer a pump to control the amount of product.

MY THOUGHTS ON APPLICATION

This is marketed for normal skin types, but this formula applies & blends pretty effortlessly over my dry skin. The consistency is quite thin but that’s not surprising considering it’s a “water-based foundation.” I will tell you that I’ve applied this both over a moisturizing primer and over bare skin; I prefer over a primer but you can certainly apply over bare skin without much tugging or patching off. Ah, and before I forget, this foundation does have a scent that dissipates after application. I personally don’t mind it, but if you are sensitive please be aware.

Rating: 5 / 5 ⭐️

MY THOUGHTS ON COVERAGE

Overall, I’d categorize this as a light coverage product, which is A-OK with me. You can build it up ever so slightly in places where you want more coverage, but do not buy it thinking it will give you a flawless complexion. It definitely won’t.

Rating: 5 / 5 ⭐️

MY THOUGHTS ON FINISH

This has a very natural finish for sure. It’s definitely not matte, definitely not dewy; it’s completely somewhere in the middle. It just looks like skin, but slightly more perfected. As someone who doesn’t like wearing heavy coverage products, this is awesome!

Rating: 5 / 5 ⭐️

MY THOUGHTS ON SHADE SELECTION

Swatch of CoverGirl Clean Liquid Foundation in the shade Ivory in direct sunlight

I only see 11 shades listed on CoverGirl’s website for this foundation; not that great. Weirdly, the shade I have is 105 Ivory but that’s not even listed online. I see 110 Classic Ivory; is it the same? No idea, so not sure what’s going on there.

Rating: 2 / 5 ⭐️

MY THOUGHTS ON LONGEVITY

This foundation definitely sticks around quite a while on my skin. Usually I wear my makeup anywhere from 8 – 11 hours depending on the day, and when I go to finally remove my makeup I still see the effects of this product on my skin. However, please keep in mind that I have not worn this foundation in heat or humidity yet, so I don’t know how this would stand up in that environment.

Rating: 5 / 5 ⭐️

MY THOUGHTS ON PRICE

You can see some of the prices listed above from different retailers. It’s CoverGirl, you know the drill, it’s very affordable stuff. For me, someone who likes a lighter coverage, I think this product is totally worth the price tag(s). If you need or want fuller coverage, as cheap as this is, it would be a waste of money for you. So make sure you know what you want before you buy.

Rating: 5 / 5 ⭐️

FINAL THOUGHTS

Despite the fumbles with packaging and shade range, I do think this is a lovely foundation if you’re looking for something lightweight and natural-looking. It’s very affordable and does exactly what it says on the tin, so to speak. I will gladly continue to use it!

Have you tried the Clean Liquid Foundation? If so, what are your thoughts? I’d love to know!

Instagram images that have inspired me, Vol. 5

Hi friends!

It’s been over a month since my last post featuring inspiring beauty images from Instagram, so I thought it was high time for another installment. If you’re new to my blog, every month I post a few beautiful and eye-catching images that I’ve cherry-picked from IG to share with you all. I feature anything from big beauty campaigns, to the work of MUAs, to product flat-lays and other things of that nature. But I do like to throw in a “wildcard” image or two, unrelated to beauty, just to keep things interesting and varied.

Catch up on all my previous IG lists: Vol. 1, Vol. 2, Vol. 3, Vol. 4.

So without further ado, here are January’s picks!

Beauty Pie IG image

I love most of the images that @beautypie uploads to their IG grid to be honest, so I could have picked any one of them. But I just loved the black against the rose gold color of this particular highlighter, and the play of light and shadows together. I also love the type Beauty Pie uses for their logo; very clean & modern. There’s just something to be said about simple, yet effective photography, and that’s what I feel Beauty Pie does really well on Instagram.

Pat McGrath Labs IG image

I didn’t even read the caption on this image from @patmcgrathreal, I just immediately snapped a pic of it! How gorgeous and beautiful is this?? Even though one of their glitter lipsticks did end up on my December anti-wishlist (which you can read here), I still do appreciate just how striking a shiny, glittery lip can look on camera. Pat McGrath Labs probably does some of the most beautiful cosmetic imagery on Instagram (in my opinion), so it was only a matter of time before one of said images made it to this list.

Kind-ly IG image

@KIND-LY is a natural Australian brand known for their deodorants, in case you were wondering. But this image has nothing to do with deodorant, and I love that! The caption definitely says it all here. It’s funny because I’m really not one for affirmations personally, but this one struck me and made me stop scrolling for more than 5 seconds (which is always a telling sign). I think it’s because the photo has an almost retro feel to it.

Drunk Elephant IG image

OK, so truth time: I’ve never tried one product from @drunkelephant (yet). Everyone else and their mother, sister & grandma seem to be obsessed with this brand, and I don’t know what it is. Does it seem like they came out of nowhere for anyone else, or is just me? Anyway, that’s besides the point in this case. Despite never having tried anything from them, I do really appreciate Drunk Elephant’s packaging and overall style. I picked this image because – hello – there’s pink everywhere, and again I love the play of shadows & light. I also love the different textures here, like the basket, the candle, the magazines, etc.

@clumsy_girl_makeup IG image

I’ve been following blogger Kelsie Marie from @clumsy_girl_makeup for a while now, and she does some really awesome looks. Her account stands out to me for two reasons: she often features indie brands, and she plays with color in a lot of interesting ways (something I’m trying to do more of). Case in point: this image. I love the interplay of the warm tones on the top lid and the cooler tones underneath the eye; it’s like color theory in action, totally cool! She also does some amazing swatch photos, so if you’re into that definitely follow her!

Linda Hallberg IG image

Isn’t this just the most amazing eye look?? The colors are just beautiful: intense but kinda soft at the same time. And the dimension created by that silvery, almost pewder color on the inner corner of the eye? Perfection! I also love the brushed-up, full brows and the draping of the pink blush high up on the cheeks. I haven’t tried any cosmetics from MUA @lindahallberg’s range yet, but I really want to! I’ve only heard good things about her products so far.

Shaunasever IG image

And now time for the non-beauty images! I follow cookbook author @shaunasever over on my personal IG account (@erica10803 if you’re interested in following me over there), and her account is filled with the most delicious, scrumptious-looking baked goods! Who doesn’t love a streusel-topping?? And with icing as well? Forget it, I couldn’t resist!

@birchbox IG image

I’m just loving all these Bird Box memes, aren’t you? There’s one funnier than the next! (P.S. if you saw Bird Box, what did they think??)

What images have inspired you recently, on Instagram or elsewhere? I’d love to know!

The (95%) drugstore lip combo I’m crushing on

Hi friends!

I’ve been really loving a certain drugstore lip combo recently that I needed to tell you guys about! First off I should say, normally I’m not one to be too fussy with lipstick. Usually I pick one color and just swipe it on. I don’t tend to layer or blend colors into each other or anything like that.

That being said, a few months back I bought one of the Elf Matte Lip Colors in the shade Tea Rose, a very cool-toned greyish-mauve. Now, I hardly ever wear cool lip colors so it was a bit of a risk for me. (I have very pale, cool-toned skin so I tend to veer towards neutral or warmer nudes & pinks to pep up my complexion.) But it was just $3.00 from Harmon so I thought, why the heck not? I’ll figure out a way to wear it, and that’s how this particular lip combo was born.

Essentially what I create when I wear this combo is an ombre effect (i.e. lighter colors seamlessly fading into darker colors to create dimension). I’ll take you now through the steps & products first, and then show you swatches & the finished look!

STEP 1: APPLY RIMMEL EXAGGERATE AUTOMATIC LIP LINER IN ADDICTION TO THE OUTER CORNERS OF THE MOUTH, Line the lips & BLEND

Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liner in Addiction

I’m not the biggest fan of lip liners in general as I only have a few in my collection, but this one from Rimmel is awesome! The formula is creamy, ever-so-slightly waxy, yet quite long-wearing. I’d say the color is halfway between pink & brown; very wearable & lovely for everyday. It’s this color that helps blend the cool-tones of the Elf lipstick in with my skin’s undertone; it acts essentially as a barrier.

Buy this product here.

Step 2: apply ELF MATTE LIP COLOR IN TEA ROSE To the cenTer of lips & blend in

Elf Matte Lip Color in Tea Rose

As I mentioned above, this is a very cool-toned, matte lipstick. It’s quite creamy upon first application and pretty long-wearing (although you will have to touch up after a big meal). It’s very easy to apply since the bullet is quite small and it’s a twist-up. (There’s actually a sharpener hidden in the very bottom!) The trick here is not letting this color get too close to the edges of my lips since it clashes with my skin’s undertone; that’s why I need the pinkier liner along the edges.

Buy this product here.

Step 3: Dab CLINIQUE CHUBBY STICK MOISTURIZING LIP BALM IN WOPPIN’ WATERMELON over the entire mOuth

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Balm in Woppin’ Watermelon

So this is where it stops being 100% drugstore! I’ve spoken about my love for the Clinique Chubby Sticks on here before, but they really are some of the most moisturizing lip products I’ve ever used. In this case, I use it purely for hydration purposes and not necessarily for any added color. The combo of the Elf & Rimmel matte, long-wearing products can get drying after a few hours on the lips, so I just quickly dab the Clinique over the top and voila, problem solved! You could use of course any lip balm you’d like.

FINISHED LOOK

I really like the effect that these three products create together. My lips look defined, more dimensional & a bit more juicy. While on a daily basis, I usually just wear one shade or nothing at all on my lips, I like to do this routine occasionally when I have a bit more time to spare.

My beauty anti-wishlist, January 2019

Hi friends!

It’s a new month so that can only mean it’s time for another beauty anti-wishlist! There are tons of new launches coming out this month (what else is new?), but unfortunately not all of them are exciting me. So I present to you a fresh list of 5 beauty items that I am passing on based on personal preferences and other reasons. As always, no disrespect is intended with this post; these are just my personal feelings.

MORPHE BRUSHES FLUIDITY FOUNDATION

Morphe Brushes Fluidity Foundation

This is Morphe’s next big launch coming on January 17th and I believe their first foray into complexion products. And it’s going to have…wait for it…60 foundation shades to choose from. Boom. They are also releasing concealers & setting powders on the same day, so this is a huge release for them and a big PR moment, no doubt. But I’m just over here yawning 😆. I’m pretty happy with my current collection of base products, and I’m really not into matte, full-coverage foundations because of my dry skin. I don’t mind full-cover concealers, but certainly not foundations. I’m sure the launch will be amazing for them, but no thanks Morphe.

PHYSICIAN’S FORMULA BUTTER COLLECTION X CASEY HOLMES PALETTE

Physician’s Formula Butter Collection x Casey Holmes Palette

This is the first influencer collab for Physician’s Formula, but unfortunately I won’t be picking this up anytime soon. The packaging looks a bit bulky (a pet peeve of mine) and when I look at it, I just don’t get excited at all. It’s a palette featuring all of Physician’s Formula Butter products that have been curated by YouTuber Casey Holmes. It includes a bronzer, blush, highlighter, 4 eyeshadows, a lip cream & a perfume. I already have the much-beloved Butter Bronzer, which I do like (read my full review here) but I’m not completely gaga over it like some other people are. I just don’t need any of what this palette offers right now.

BH COSMETICS MINI ZODIAC CAPRICORN PALETTE

BH Cosmetics Mini Zodiac Capricorn Palette

I know the shadows from BH Cosmetics are awesome quality, and oh so affordable, but this palette just looks really basic, ya know? And I’m a Capricorn too, I should love this palette! I can only speak for myself of course, and I already have so many brown shadows (both warm & cool) in my collection. I love earthy tones a lot, but this just isn’t doing it for me, sorry BH! The highlighter looks gorgeous but I would never buy this just for one item.

MILANI COSMETICS CONCEAL + PERFECT Longwear CONCEALER

Milani Conceal + Perfect Concealer

Milani’s new concealer offering goes on sale on January 8th, and honestly if I hadn’t just bought two drugstore concealers last fall (Revlon PhotoReady Candid & Joah Beauty Truly Yours Full Cover), I might get this! I love me a drugstore concealer, but I’m just too stocked up right now. I’ve been curious to try Milani’s complexion products in the past but the shades always seemed to be too dark for me. But the new Conceal + Perfect has 18 shades, so I may have an easier time finding the right shade. According to Trendmood, this has medium-to-full coverage which I do like the sound of, but like I said before, I just have too many concealers to justify another purchase right now.

BENEFIT ROLLER LINER LIQUID eyeLINER

Benefit Roller Liner The Matte Liquid Liner

I believe this just became available a few days ago. I’ve been a long-time fan of Benefit’s Roller Lash Mascara, but I’m just not a liquid liner kinda girl. I’m quite horrible at eyeliner to be fair, so I either use a soft pencil or a dark shadow and just smudge it along my lash line to get rid of any imperfections. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a liquid liner in my life now that I think about it, so I’m certainly not about to start now. However if you do love your liquid liner, this does sound like a good one. Supposely the formula is waterproof and therefore quite long-wearing. My mom would probably love this actually.

My quick, 8-minute makeup routine

Hi friends!

Let’s face it, most people have very little time each day to do their makeup before rushing off to work, school, or wherever. Likewise, a lot of people simply don’t wear much makeup on a day-to-day basis, or are perhaps just starting to experiment with it. These are all examples of where having a quick, effortless face routine in your arsenal can be very beneficial.

So in this post, I wanted to give you a peek into my quick, 8-minute makeup routine that utilizes just 6 products. I’ll also give you some tips I have for quick application along the way. If you can apply the same amount of products or even more in less time than this, please teach me your ways Yoda! I’ve tried to master the whole 5-minute face and personally it’s just too hard for me. I think it’s the mascara application that slows me down; I like to pile it on! My mom is actually really good at quick makeup, so I’ll have to start mimicking her!

THE STRATEGY

When I want to apply my makeup fast, I think of the facial features I want to emphasize the most or the areas of my face that I want to “correct” the most. Of course, this will be different for everyone and it will help you choose which products to use. For me, I always want to emphasize my eyes & cheeks and correct my under-eye discoloration. So think about what the indispensible aspects of a makeup routine are for you and go from there.

Also, think about how you want to apply your products in a short amount of time. You may be able to work quickly with brushes or sponges, but for me I work everything in quickly with the warmth of my hands.

THE PRODUCTS

Now, you can use whatever products you want of course. But when I want quick makeup, I go for textures that I know will be impactful, will blend out quickly with my hands, and could be used for more than one purpose. For me, cream textures are the most versatile & blendable. And if I want to wear lipstick too, I make sure to pick a formula that’s creamy and easy to apply; no lip liners, precision or extra patience needed!

Product flatlay with NARS, Clinique, Peripera, Kiko, Bobbi Brown & Hourglass

In this particular makeup routine, I used mascara (2 types, high-maintenance I know!), concealer, cream blush (as both blush & highlighter), brow gel & lipstick. I’ve listed & linked the exact products below if you’re interested to know.

Read this: The 2018 beauty discoveries I’m obsessed with!

Read this: Five moisturizing lippies for Autumn-Winter

THE STEPS

Again, you can order your routine any way you like; there’s no right or wrong way here. But this is just what I did, step-by-step, to achieve the quick look you see on me in the image above. And yes I did time myself by the way! It was actually quite a fun little challenge.

Step 1 – Apply copious amounts of mascara to top & bottom lashes. When I forego eyeshadow, eyeliner or any color on my eyes, I want my mascara to be as dramatic as possible.

Step 2 – Apply concealer to my under-eyes, around my nose and on any little red spots or blemishes.

Step 3 – Apply cream blush to the tops of my cheekbones to add color & sheen. The Kiko blush I used has little flecks of shimmer in it, so it can double as a highlight in this case.

Step 4 – Brush brow gel through my brows.

Step 5 – Apply lipstick & smudge into lips.

I hope that was helpful to you if you’re looking for ideas or inspiration on how to do quick makeup! Do you have any tips or tricks on no-fuss makeup you can share? I’d love to know!
