I went to a CVS Beauty IRL Store & here’s my haul!

Hi friends!

Warning: this is going to be a jam-packed post! Remember when I wrote about CVS teaming up with Glamsquad & eSalon to bring us the Beauty IRL store-within-a-store back in September? Well if you don’t you can read my inital post here, but just to recap super quickly: in only 4 select locations across the U.S. CVS is currently piloting an enhanced beauty store experience where they have expanded product offerings, beauty services like blow-out’s, etc (via Glamsquad), and custom hair color mixing (via eSalon). If you want more detailed info make sure to check out my earlier post!

THE EXPERIENCE

Well, I’m lucky enough to live not far from the Stamford, CT test location and last weekend I went! It was beyond awesome. I was like a kid in a candy store, taking photos and walking around exclaiming to myself and to my mother how utterly cool this all was. The standard drugstore brands like Physician’s Formula, Revlon & CoverGirl were definitely there, but there were so many more interesting findings. K-beauty was everywhere. From Peripera, to The Creme Shop, to Peach Slices, to A’Pieu and beyond. There were tons and tons of sheet masks; rows of the stuff. Entire sections of Korean hand & body creams. Also, there were indie brands like Doll 10, Storybook Cosmetics, & Karity too. A total beauty-lovers dream!

Here’s a quick video to give you a feel for the space:

I took a lot of photos of the aisles. I tried to get it all but there was so much it was impossible. The only areas I didn’t encounter were the sections with mini products and the testers, although a very nice CVS beauty consultant told me there were definitely testers there.

And that was just the products. The Glamsquad beauty stand was in the back, next to the custom color-mixing machine from eSalon called “Polly.” I saw one woman getting her hair blown out but that was it. That area seemed to be a bit vacant (just for reference, I went on a Sunday afternoon around 3 p.m.). All in all, I’d say the foot traffic in the area was pretty low. It was just me, my mother and a few other women navigating the aisles. However, the same beauty consultant I had spoken with earlier said they were getting good feedback and good responses overall to the enhanced beauty store.

THE HAUL

Of course I had to pick up a few items 😉. How could I not?? I was very restrained and I got just three things, but I could have grabbed so much more. I really want to go back with my girlfriends soon! I did a quick little video of my haul for Instagram, which you can see down below.

Since filming this, I’ve used all the products mentioned a bit more (or for the first time). My early impressions are that I like all the items I picked up. I can definitely recommend the brow mascara from Peripera; the brush is tiny and it does a great job coating all your brow hairs with little to no clumping. I will need to use the cushion blush & the concealer a little more before I form my final opinions, so stay tuned on those.

You can shop the Tres Cheek Cushion Blush from The Creme Shop in C’est La Peach  here.

You can shop the Speedy Browcara from Peripera here.

You can shop the Truly Yours Full Cover Concealer from Joah Beauty here.

Has anyone gone to a CVS Beauty IRL store yet? Has anyone used any of the products I picked up in my haul? If so, what did you think? I’d love to know!

Hi friends!

Here’s a little update video for you today on the coolest-looking lip gloss I ever did see, the Disco Lip Gloss from Winky Lux. I hope you enjoy!

Instagram images that inspired me this week, Vol. 3

Hi friends!

It’s time to share another round of cool & inspiring images with you! If you are new to the blog, each month I pluck several images off Instagram that I find beautiful and eye-catching and share with you all why I find these images to be inspirational. Usually they are all beauty-related since that’s my jam over on my blog account @weareglamerus (go follow me, please and thank you!). However, I do like to also throw in some wildcards as well to keep things interesting.

So let’s take a look at what I picked for this month’s installment!

(You can catch up on my previous lists here: September, October.)

igimagesinspirationglowrecipe

So far I don’t have anything from Korean beauty brand Glow Recipe in my skincare aresenal, but I so want to get something! It seemed like every beauty blogger & influencer was singing the praises of their now-famous Watermelon Glow Pink Juice Moisturizer last year; it didn’t hurt that the packaging design was so well executed, it alone launched a thousand Instagram posts. Everything in their line just looks so dreamy. Case in point with this photo; look at those colors & textures. I have no idea what a “pressed serum” is but after looking at this, I want it! You can shop Glow Recipe here.

igimagesinspirationgeniuss

If you’re into beauty on Instagram, you gotta be into the good ‘ole flat-lay. Everyone wants to see what you’re using and how artfully you can stage all the products. Some are master stagers (I’m still in training myself 😊), and beauty blogger Geniussr certainly knows how to nail them! I love the mixture of textures and prints in this particular photo and how they play off the bright pops of color from the flowers, plus the print of the magazine. I just love how luxe this feels with the golds & blacks and the lush product brands. Check out Geniussr’s blog here!

igimagesinspirationmavie

MavieCosmetics is a new brand that will be launching tomorrow 11/6 in the U.S. with shadow palettes, blushes & lipsticks. (Stay tuned for my next post for more information!) From what I can tell so far with this brand, all the products have very inspirational, aspirational or confidence-boosting names like “Let Your Light Shine” and “I Can and I Will.” So all the Instagram promotion leading up to the launch also has very motivational messaging like in the above photo. This one in particular caught my eye. While I don’t necessarily believe the message to be a categorical truth, I do believe that in most cases we are our own worst enemies who stand in our own way. Cosmetics just got deep…oh dear!

igimagesinspirationmissoma

I just love Missoma’s style. I’ve been a fan of the brand ever since I got two pieces from their Lucy Williams collection for Christmas last year, which are beautiful and extremely good quality. If you’re not familiar with Missoma, take a quick peruse of their site or their Instagram page. They do really gorgeous-looking pieces that are dainty yet very elegant. I’ve had my eye on the Roman coin-style necklaces for a while now, so that may be this year’s Christmas gift request 😊. Honestly I could pick any of their Instagram photos to feature here, but I particularly liked this one because of the crystal texture in the background and the cool patterns on the trinket tray.

igimagesinspirationdakotascarl

Isn’t this just the coolest?? If you love beauty & illustration then you must follow Dakota Scarlett’s Instagram account. She’s an awesome artist that has combined her gift for illustration and her love of beauty & fashion magazines into these amazing works of art. Again, I could have picked any of her IG images to feature here but this was the most recent one and I love all the tones of pink here. Talk about eye catching! I encourage you to also check out Dakota’s website.

igimagesinspirationohiibeauty

I first wrote about Ohii Beauty, the new makeup line from Urban Outfitters, in a brand overview-type post when it first launched back in September. (P.S. I bought a few items from the line since then so another post will be coming soon!) I think you probably know by now that I love a bit of texture, so I couldn’t pass this image by without a click. I love the color contrast, and how the product swatches look so bright and light against the greyish-blue background. You can shop Ohii here.

igimagesinspirationbeautifulju

We’re back in flat-lay land! Sorry, I can’t help myself! London blogger Mavey, who runs the @onebeautifuljunkie Instagram account, is another must-follow if you love looking at a beautifully edited, beautifully designed flay-lay. I love, love, love the slightly vintage feel of this photo thanks to its off-white, slightly fuzzy focus. And the pale, cool colors of the products playing against the gold jewelry creates such a gorgeous palette to gaze at.

igimagesinspirationfourthray

Don’t we all?? While Fourth Ray Beauty is talking about skincare here, this statement could apply to so many aspects of life so that’s why I was drawn to it. That and the color palette, again, is so lovely to gaze at. If you’re not familiar with Fourth Ray Beauty, they are ColourPop’s new sister brand under Seed Beauty specializing in affordable and attractively-packaged skincare products. You can shop the brand here (I haven’t tried anything yet myself).

igimagesinspirationlabs

And now for my wildcard! If this photo doesn’t stir some kind of emotion in you, I don’t know what would. C’mon, who doesn’t love cute puppies?? I follow a lot of dog & pet accounts on my personal Instagram (@erica10803 if you wanna follow me over there too!), like #labsofinstagram, so I’m constantly seeing these adorable photos of puppies & dogs in cute and funny situations. I have a real thing for Labs especially; I’ve always had one since I was about 10 years-old and I think they are some of the most beautiful animals.

What images have inspired you recently, on Instagram or elsewhere? I’d love to know!

A drugstore dupe for Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Lipstick?

Hi friends!

I’ve spoken a few times on here about my love & obsession with the Matte Revolution Lipstick in Pillow Talk from Charlotte Tilbury. It’s a beautiful lipstick with luxe, fluted rose gold packaging that to me embodies what is often referred to as a “modern matte” texture. It’s a velvety matte that is so cushy & comfy, but at the same time clings to your lips for longer than a cream lipstick generally would. This is an extremely popular shade from the brand, with 1 sold every 2 minutes in 2017 according to their website.

But Charlotte Tilbury is quite a premium brand so this formula comes at the hefty price tag of $34.00. I personally think it’s worth the money, but others may not think so. Or perhaps you like the idea of the “modern matte” texture, but can’t fathom spending $30+ on one makeup item. I hear you, and I got you. A few months ago I picked up one of the Mix N’ Matte Lip Duo’s from Flower Beauty in the shade Honey Nude for a mere $10.00, and I tell you it’s just as beautiful & comfy as Pillow Talk! According to Flower Beauty’s website, this product is also a best-seller for them.

A closer look at the lipstick bullets. Top is Pillow Talk, which has a square-shaped bullet that makes application super simple. Bottom is Honey Nude, which has a traditional slanted bullet shape.

I’m going to compare these lipsticks on 3 elements: color, texture & longevity. At the end I’ll give you my verdict on if these are dupes or not. So let’s get into it!

COLOR

Pillow Talk is described on the Charlotte Tilbury website as a “nude pink matte lipstick,” and I couldn’t agree more. It’s definitely a lot more on the pink side of nude than Honey Nude is. Honey Nude pulls a bit more brown & dark. Hopefully you can see the difference in the swatch photo below; there are also post-application photos towards the end of the post.

flowerbeautycharlottetilburyswatches
Top swatch is Pillow Talk. Bottom swatch is Honey Nude.

TEXTURE

I’d say the textures on both these lipsticks are quite similar. They both apply extremely smoothly & very opaquely with minimal tugging. Both are lightweight and almost “set” onto your lips. When you rub your lips together, there’s a definite feeling of moisture and a bit of give there. A few subtle differences: Pillow Talk feels a bit more velvety or almost powdery (but not in a bad way), while Honey Nude feels more creamyHoney Nude is also a bit thicker than Pillow Talk to be honest, but not by much. At no point during the day do my lips feel dry with either of these lipsticks on, even after eating or drinking.

LONGEVITY

While both lipsticks do last quite well on the lips throughout the day, you will have to touch up after a big meal with both formulas. These are not liquid lipsticks that shrink-wrap onto your lips; you kinda know that going in. That being said, both formulas have lasted on me about 6 to 7 hours without major fading. Actually Honey Nude has lasted a little bit longer since the formula is slightly thicker than Pillow Talk.

flowerbeautylipstickcharlottetilburydupe

flowerbeautyswatches
Honey Nude swatches from left to right: matte lipstick alone, pearlized gloss alone, & pearlized gloss layered on top of matte lipstick.

If you’re chomping at the bit now to get your hands on Honey Nude from Flower Beauty, you should also know that you get 2 products in 1! (It ain’t called a Lip Duo for nothing!) On the opposite side of the matte lipstick, you get a pearlized gloss that you can wear on its own or layered on top of the lipstick. Honestly, I’ve only worn the gloss once on its own so I really can’t say much about it. But it’s cool that you get 2 products for only $10.00! You can check out more info on Flower Beauty’s website.

charlottetilburypillowtalkselfie
Pillow Talk applied on the lips. If you’re curious, I also have the NYX Grind Machinist Palette on my eyes!

So, do I think Honey Nude from Flower Beauty is a dupe for Pillow Talk from Charlotte Tilbury? After analyzing both formulas, I would have to say they are not dupes. However they are quite similar to each other, so I would call Honey Nude a great drugstore alternative to the more expensive Pillow Talk. In fact, for less than one-third of the price you get 2 products that feel & last just as well as (if not slightly better than) Pillow Talk. A total steal, I’d say!

*Shop for Pillow Talk @ Sephora.

Have you tried either lipsticks from this post before? If so, what did you think? Do you know any drugstore dupes or alternatives to Pillow Talk? I’d love to know!

A night with L’Oreal in NYC

Hi friends!

Something a bit different for today. I had the pleasure of attending an event this past Wednesday night featuring a talk with Jean-Paul Agon, the CEO & Chairman of the L’Oreal Group. If you’re brand new to the beauty scene, L’Oreal is a huge global beauty & fashion empire that owns countless other brands you’re probably very familiar with including Urban Decay, Giorgio Armani, Maybelline, Clarisonic, Essie, Redken, Garnier & Pureology just to name a small fraction.

I bought my ticket for this event back in late summer since I was so intrigued by the theme of the discussion, “Beauty for the New World.” I’m always interested in what industry professionals have to say about the future of beauty. And from the head of L’Oreal no less, so I knew I had to go.

The talk was hosted by the CEW (Cosmetic Executive Women) Organization at The Harmonie Club in NYC. This place was swanky, let me tell you! Right by Central Park on the Upper East Side, I’m sure you get the picture now 😉. It was a 2 1/2 hour event. The first hour was cocktails & hor d’oeuvres (food & service were great but I felt a little awkward since I went to this event solo and didn’t really know anyone), and then the talk and q&a with Jean-Paul filled out the rest of the time slot.

cewevent2
View from my seat before the talk started.
cewevent1
It was quite a crowded event.

The first thing I noticed when I sat down in the event space was the massive swag bag on each seat! I felt like I hit the jackpot (even though I kinda paid for it with my ticket price, but moving on)! There was cool stuff from a few L’Oreal brands like IT Cosmetics, Lancome & Kiehl’s. Take a look below.

Jean-Paul has been with L’Oreal for 40 years so his perspective on the beauty industry and how it’s changed was very interesting. From the ‘70’s until about 2010 he claimed the way L’Oreal did business didn’t really change much. But then the digital revolution happened and nothing was ever the same. He views the onslaught of technology not as a threat to the beauty business but as an exciting opportunity. For example, the consumer is now at the heart of all products & decisions that are made at L’Oreal, whereas prior to the digital revolution it was products & services that were at the center of decision-making. Throughout his talk he was emphatic on the point that big companies must be ready for change and should try to anticipate it as much as possible. When asked what he hopes his legacy at L’Oreal will be, he said he wanted to be remembered as someone who readied the company for the future as much as possible.

There were some other interesting tidbits I took from the talk. Back in 2001 when Jean-Paul last spoke at a CEW event, an audience member called him out on the fact that L’Oreal was still a “boys club” and had little to no females in high positions of authority. Seventeen years later, things have evolved and now L’Oreal is lauded in the industry for gender equality and pay parity. And when they bought Kiehl’s in 2000 it was a humble $20 million business; news flash it’s now valued at over $1 billion!

What do you think of L’Oreal? Do you like or dislike their products? I’d love to know!

Review: Juvia’s Place Eyeshadow Palettes

Hi friends!

You may remember I first posted about indie brand Juvia’s Place a few weeks back when they became available in Ulta stores. Well right before that post, my mom and I did a joint order from the Juvia’s Place website since they were having a sale on a few of their eyeshadow palettes at the time. We picked up three palettes in total: The Nubian, The Saharan, & The Warrior. So I’ve been playing with them ever since and now I’m ready to bring my thoughts to the blog!

This is going to be a bit different in form from my previous reviews since this is the first time I’ll be talking about several products in one review. So for each palette I’ll show you swatches, give you my pros & cons, and then my quick final thoughts. Lastly, I’ll show you one look I did per palette.

One note: the ‘Shop now’ links I included below direct you to Ulta. If you’re outside the U.S. or Canada, click the second link in the above paragraph. Juvia’s Place does ship internationally from their warehouse.

Now let’s get into it!

  • $20.00 for 12 shades
  • 1 duo-chrome, 2 metallics, 4 mattes, 5 satins,

Pros

  • Intense pigmentation
  • Smooth application
  • Has longevity (I wore these shadows for around 10 hours with little to no fading)
  • Great price
  • Ulta accessability
  • Lightweight packaging

Cons

  • Tons of fall-out during application
  • Crumbly texture on metallics

Final Thoughts

I really love this palette and would recommend it. If you like neutral-to-warm golds, bronzes & peaches this is the palette for you. I wouldn’t say it’s perhaps the most ‘everyday makeup’ friendly palette out there since it leans more towards shimmers & metallics, but you can certainly get some very wearable daytime looks depending on the shades you choose. I would recommend using your finger to apply the metallic shades (the two shades in the upper right corner of the photo above), or a wet brush; they can be crumbly and a bit messy otherwise. But once they are pushed onto the eye over a primer they cling very well and are gorgeous.

Pros

  • Intense pigmentation
  • Smooth application
  • Has longevity (I wore these shadows for around 10 hours with little to no fading)
  • Great price
  • Ulta accessability
  • Lightweight packaging

Cons

  • Tons of fall-out during application
  • 1 slightly underperforming shade (Kia)

Final Thoughts

I had my eye on this palette for months and I have to say I was the most excited to start using this one out of the three. And I’m happy to report that I love it! I love the bright pops of color that make this palette so unique. (If you’re not into experimenting with color, I’d give this one a pass.) Best of all? The mattes perform just as well as the satins & shimmers. Even though Jamila (the bright orangey matte) swatched poorly on my hand, it applied evenly and smoothly on my lid. As stated above, the only slightly underperforming shade of this whole bunch is Kia, the beautiful greenish shade in the upper right corner. It was a bit crumbly and didn’t layer over mattes well (I tried using it as a liner first). It performs best when you push it over the eye with a brush.

  • $20.00 for 9 shades
  • 3 mattes, 6 shimmers

Pros

  • Intense pigmentation
  • Smooth application
  • Has longevity (I wore these shadows for about 10 hours with little to no fading)
  • Great price
  • Ulta accessability
  • Lightweight packaging

Cons

  • Tons of fall-out during application
  • Crumbly texture on some shimmers

Final Thoughts

Wow, this palette has some intense color payoff! Out of all the palettes from this post, I remember exclaiming ‘wow!’ a few times during application. Again, I would recommend to use your finger or a wet brush to apply the shimmers onto your eye. They are incredibly soft to the touch and don’t seem to cling to dry brushes very well. Juvia’s Place actually recommends using wet synthetic brushes to apply their satin & shimmer textures, but sorry, I just never do that. So I use my finger instead. Regardless, I love this one too. It’s just so beautiful, the colors and the textures. The mattes perform superbly which for me is always the ultimate test.

THE NUBIAN PALETTE LOOK

nubianlook2
I used the orangey-cranberry shade (second row, third from left) all over my top lid, and the goldy-bronze shade (second row, second from left) smudged under my lower lash line.

THE SAHARAN PALETTE LOOK

saharanlook3
I used Jamila blended all over my lid and into my crease. Look at that pigment! It stayed super bright all day long too.

THE WARRIOR PALETTE LOOK

I used Amina all over my lid and Moremi on my inner corner for highlight.

One correction: the Benefit Gimme Brow is available in 8 shades, not 6 shades as I stated in the video.

A (teeny-weeny) Sephora haul

Last week my mom and I found ourselves in Sephora, as you do. I had to buy a watch for my brother’s birthday and since Sephora is right next to Nordstrom in our local mall, you know, we had to go in. It would have been rude not to. I was very restrained and only picked up two (count ‘em two!) items. (I did a declutter recently people, so don’t judge me too harshly!).

Just to be clear, I have not started using either of these products yet so I cannot provide any well-informed opinions or insights just yet. With that said, let’s talk about what I bought!

baremineralshourglass
Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara (mini) & Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue

BARE MINERALS COMPLEXION RESCUE – Shop here

baremineralsfront

baremineralsswatches
Opal, the lightest shade.

I’m very excited to start using this product. I’m really either a tinted moisturizer girl or just a concealer-no foundation girl these days. Very low-maintenance on the base. (Except if I’m going to an event, or I know I will be out for 10-12+ hours in a day. In those cases, I will use my trusty Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation in very thin layers.)  The Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue has been a pretty popular item since it initially launched (it was an Allure Readers’ Choice Award winner), and it was something that always interested me. I’ve been searching for a cheaper alternative to my beloved Bobbi Brown SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm (full review here), since that one is so incredibly pricey. Fingers crossed this will be it!

There’s tons of info on this product on Bare Minerals’ site, but this supposedly offers sheer coverage, hydration, SPF protection, and overall clean ingredients without a lot of nasties like mineral oil, parabens, & phthalates.

I like the packaging on this a lot. It’s basically like a squeezy tube, which should prevent mess and control the amount of product that comes out well.

Like a lot of tinted moisturizers though (or BB creams, whatever) the shade selection isn’t very large at all; there are just 16 shades that cater mainly to lighter & medium skintones so that’s disappointing.

I definitely want to do a more in-depth review of this after I’ve used it for a while, so stay tuned for that.

HOURGLASS CAUTION EXTREME LASH MASCARA – Shop here

hourglassmascara

hourglassmascarawand

This is a fairly new release from Hourglass, a luxury brand that I love. I’ve been hearing really good things, but to be honest any mascara that says “extreme” on the packaging has got my attention! According to the Hourglass site, this promises extreme volume, length, lift & definition thanks to its “4D Amplifier” brush. No idea what that means, but I’m very into it! I want 4D lashes! I did notice that the bristles on one side seem to be a bit longer than the other, which reminds me a bit of the CoverGirl Super Sizer Mascara. I picked up the mini size for $14.00, but the standard size normally retails for $29.00. I got high hopes for this one!

Have you tried either product from this haul? Have you picked up anything interesting from Sephora recently? I’d love to know!

Video: The neutral blush of dreams

Hi friends!

I’m back with a short video today about my current favorite blush combo. I hope you like it! Full disclosure, I originally filmed this for my Instagram story last week and I didn’t feel like getting my face out that day 😆. Hope you don’t mind that, but I still thought some of you may find this useful. I’ve included a photo of myself below the video so that you may see what the finished effect looks like on my skin, so make sure you scroll down to see that.

P. S. I can confirm that the full product name on the e.l.f. compact is the Hydrating Aqua Beauty Blush & Bronzer. It’s only $6.00 on their website, so it’s a total steal in my opinion. I spoke about it briefly in a much earlier post on cream blushes. And if you’re interested in the Glossier Cloud Paint, here’s a link to more info. The hype is definitely justified with this product!

Here is what the combination of the e.l.f. & Glossier products looks like on my skin. Love it!

Do you have a favorite blush or blush combo? I’d love to know!
