Hi friends!
If you haven’t heard of the new Maybelline Sky High Mascara, chances are you aren’t on social media much these days. (For that I salute you!) This bad boy has been ALL over TikTok and Instagram since the beginning of 2021 – I believe it sold out 4 times time since launch, according to Allure – so you know I absolutely had to try it out. You seriously do not need to spend much cash to get amazing lashes, so I (almost) exclusively buy my mascaras from the drugstore nowadays.
That being said, is the Maybelline Sky High Mascara really worthy of all this social media hype? That’s what I’m going to break down in today’s post for you! I’m going to touch on 3 key elements – the BRUSH, the BUILD (i.e. its ability to layer on itself), and of course the LENGTH – before I give my final verdict.
Let’s dive in!

Sky High lash impact from every angle! Lash Sensational Sky High mascara delivers full volume and limitless length. Exclusive Flex Tower mascara brush bends to volumize and extend every single lash from root to tip. Waterproof mascara formula infused with bamboo extract and fibers for long, full & lightweight lashes, that don’t flake or smudge. Available in Very Black and Blackest Black. Allergy tested. Ophthalmologist tested. Suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. Removes easily with waterproof eye makeup remover.
THE BRUSH
The first thing you may notice about the brush is its thinness, which is typical of a lot of lengthening mascaras that nestle right down to the roots of the lashes. Next is the shape: it’s tapered with short plastic bristles that are perfect for raking through the lashes from root to tip. As you start using it the next thing you may notice is that the brush is extremely flexible. In fact, this might be the most flexible brush I’ve ever used. Does that make the application better/easier/more interesting? Ahhh, I’m not sure. I’ve used both flexible and stiffer mascara brushes over the years, and I don’t think it really makes a difference. I can get my lashes fully coated either way.
THE BUILD
I’m a little shocked that Maybelline claims that this mascara builds volume. I can assure you there’s no real volume to be seen here, especially if you just layer one coat. One coat does absolutely nothing for my lashes except darken and separate them. The second coat builds a little volume, but it mainly just separates my lashes. I wouldn’t recommend layering any more than two coats with this formula, otherwise you may experience some chunkiness.

The brush on the Maybelline Sky High Mascara is super flexible, with short and tapered plastic spikes.

THE LENGTH
I’m happy to report that the Maybelline Sky High Mascara can get your lashes pretty sky high (I had to!). Length is definitely where this formula shines for me, but again I’d say it really needs that second coat to achieve maximum drama.
VERDICT
This is definitely a case of a product not living up to its hype for me. It’s OK, but it’s nothing special, and if you have sparse lashes that need a lot of help this really isn’t the product for you. I much prefer thickening, volumizing mascara formulas like the Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara or the L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara. I will say, the lasting power is really good; it doesn’t flake or smudge at all. However I had no idea that this was a waterproof formula until I read the product description! There’s no such wording or call-out on the packaging, which is totally odd to me. I typically hate waterproof formulas because I find them so difficult to remove. I find this mascara only comes off for me in a steamy shower.
Have you tried the Maybelline Sky High Mascara yet? If so, what did you think? I’d love to know!
xo, and be well, Erica

I like the container! I usually have to wear waterproof mascara because my eyes water a lot, especially if the wind is blowing. (and it’s always blowing here for some reason! 🙄) But I agree that they are difficult to get off. Even mascara remover doesn’t completely get it all.
A lot of people I know swear by waterproof formulas and wear nothing else, but I just find them so dang annoying! It’s great that they don’t smudge or flake though, I have to say.
