Unruly brows? NYX Control Freak has it covered!

We’re talking brow gel today and I know, I just can’t help myself when it comes to this subject. But this one is super cheap! And super great!

You may remember that I recently reviewed the NYX Bare With Me Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil Brow Setter over the summer. If you didn’t have a chance to read it, I’ll condense it for you in one sentence. I definitely liked it (I’m still using it actually!) but I just wished it had more hold.

Well it turns out NYX had the solution in their line all along! Enter the Control Freak Eyebrow Gel. This is definitely nothing new, but it’s new to me. I recently picked it up from Target for only $3.99 (!!) on the recommendation of Anna or @sixfiftyfouram on Instagram; she’s like my makeup kindred spirit so make sure to check her out!

It kinda feels like the answer to my brow gel prayers – big statement I know! So let’s get into some details.

WHAT DOES THE NYX CONTROL FREAK EYEBROW GEL DO?

Out of control brows got you down? NYX Professional Makeup Control Freak Eyebrow Gel offers a new way to tame those arches fast. The clear formula works great with powders and pencils you use to fill-in your brows to seal the deal and hold them in place. The unique, non-sticky formula is comfortable to wear all day and can double as a clear mascara that defines, separates and enhances the natural curl of lashes.

As the description states, this is primarily a brow-taming tool and I would whole-heartedly agree with that. It’s a very simple product. It doesn’t offer any color to fill in gaps or fibers to boost size, but it does offer major hold. So keep that in mind when you’re shopping for your next brow gel. I’d say this is perfect for the person who’s looking to tame or hold their brow hairs in place, but doesn’t want to spend much money.

WHY I LOVE IT

There’s a few reasons why, but mainly it’s the “insurance” it gives me. I know that when I brush the NYX Control Freak through my brow hairs that they just aren’t going anywhere all day! True story: I popped this in my makeup travel bag this past weekend to visit my best friend in Boston. It was a windy weekend, and we were outside every day. After nearly 12 hours of wear – and windy conditions – I was shocked that my brows still held their shape at the end of the day. A triumph, I’d say!

Secondly, I haven’t noticed any flakes or any weird white cast in my brows throughout the day. This is always a bit of a concern with clear brow gels, but luckily I haven’t experienced that.

Lastly, it’s super cheap. What’s not to love??

THE ONE THING I DON’T LOVE

Despite my slight obsession, I do think the brush here is awkwardly big and wide for the space you’re working in. Check out the photo directly above. See what I mean? It looks more like a mascara wand to me. Typically brow gels have much, much smaller brushes, so I’m not sure why NYX designed this so differently. I’d imagine it wouldn’t be the easiest to use if you have really small, thin brows. Regardless I can definitely make it work on me without too much difficulty, but it would be even more amazing if they made the brush smaller!
