Weleda Skin Food Original vs. Light: Which should you buy?

Weleda Skin Food Original in darker green tube. Weleda Skin Food Light in smaller lighter-green tube.

Hi friends!

Let’s shift gears and talk a little skincare today, shall we? I’ve talked about my dry-skin trials and tribulations on here before so I won’t bore you again with those. (But if you have no idea what I’m going on about, check out my last skincare post which I’ll link below.) I’m always, always intrigued when I hear that a product is intensely hydrating and nourishing. So when I kept seeing Weleda Skin Food pop up again and again on my Instagram feed, my antenna went up. It’s tagline said everything I needed to know: “The ultimate moisturizer for dry, rough skin.” Bingo!

Weleda Skin Food is nothing new; it’s been on the market since the 1920’s. But I feel like social media has recently given it a major boost of exposure. It’s used by a lot of makeup artists for skin prep during photo shoots, and the brand boasts its ability to make the skin appear luminous. It’s an extremely rich, thick product that borders on being greasy. Recently (I believe it was last year) Weleda debuted the Skin Food Light Nourishing Cream, which is the lighter version of its original more heavy-duty sister. I picked up both versions from Whole Foods about a month ago and have been testing them out ever since. So let me fill you in now on what I feel are the main differences between the Original and the Light version. I hope this will be especially helpful for those of you out there who are wondering which version to buy.

WELEDA SKIN FOOD ORIGINAL ULTRA RICH CREAM

Skin Food is a universal savior of dry, rough skin on faces, elbows, hands and feet. With extracts of gentle viola tricolor, calendula and chamomile, in a rich, thick base of oils and beeswax, Skin Food hydrates skin to give you a healthy-looking glow.

Makes skin feel hydrated, smooth and moisturized. Dermatologically tested.

Besides being much thicker in consistency than the Light version – and obviously a different formula – the Original version sits on the skin a bit longer. In short, it’s not as fast absorbing. This is for those of you with serious dry skin who are looking for relief. When you rub it in, the consistency changes from a thick cream almost to an oil. You will feel a slight greasiness on your skin after you apply it but not for very long. But if you are adverse to any feeling of any tackiness, definitely skip this version.

I’ve enjoyed applying this to my elbows, legs and feet where I experience the roughest dry skin. (It’s a little too greasy to apply to the face, in my opinion.) I apply it any time I feel like it really, but I usually do it right before bed. Over time I’ve noticed it absolutely helps with my problem areas; they feel smoother, more hydrated, and appear less flakey.

On a side note, I’ve also enjoyed its lovely botanical smell.

This comes in 2 sizes: the 75 ml which retails for $18.99, and the 30 ml which retails for $12.50. (I have the larger size, pictured here.) Check out the Weleda website for more info. For those in the U.S., Target also stocks Weleda products so you may be able to get these products cheaper online.*

WELEDA SKIN FOOD LIGHT NOURISHING CREAM

The new cream is a more light and fluid version of our best-selling Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream.  A vibrant herbal blend of chamomile, calendula, and pansy invigorates your senses while feeding dry skin a dose of moisture.

Helps make skin feel smoothed and nourished. Dermatologically tested and free from synthetic preservatives, fragrances, colorants or raw materials derived from mineral oils.

This Light version has a much more lotiony texture & consistency than the Original. It doesn’t have the same oily feeling on the skin, and absorbs rather quickly. You shouldn’t be too bothered in terms of tackiness with this one as you might with the Original edition. However, this does still feel extremely nourishing on the skin. So this is for the person who wants all the benefits of the Original version, but less tackiness or greasiness.

I’ve been using this as a moisturizing primer before applying my base makeup, and I’ve been loving it! My skin feels super hydrated throughout the day, but not greasy in the slightest. I’d imagine this would also be a great hand cream to use throughout the winter or whenever you feel you need it.

This version has the same beautiful botanical smell as the Original.

This comes in 2 sizes: the 75 ml which retails for $18.99, and the 30 ml which retails for $12.50. (I have the smaller size, pictured here.) Check out the Weleda website for more info.

Have you tried Weleda Skin Food yet? What’s your favorite moisturizer? I’d love to know!
