I’d been eyeing this cult product from Supergoop after seeing sooo many accounts I follow on Instagram post photos and talk about how amazing it was. So recently my mom was in a Blue Mercury and asked if I wanted anything; without hesitation I told her to grab me the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 40. I’ve admittedly never been the best at applying sunscreen unless I was at the beach or in direct sunlight all day; ironic considering I’m incredibly pale. But that’s all going to change now!
This product is actually marketed as an oil-free makeup primer so the whole idea is to layer products on top of it. But of course you can always wear it on its own too. Take a look at the official description:
Our 100% invisible, 100% game-changing makeup-gripping primer with SPF 40. This award-winning formula is also weightless and scentless, and it has a slightly glowy effect that allows you to create any type of (makeup or no-makeup) look. But that’s not all… It also contains clean, skin-soothing ingredients like red algae, which helps protect your skin from the blue light that’s emitted by your phone and computer.
SPF packed with powerful ingredients
Red Algae – Helps protect against blue light emitted by electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers.
Frankincense – Helps the skin be resilient and provides a soothing effect.
Complex Derived From Meadowfoam Seed – Increases hydration levels, resulting in a more even skin texture.
HOW I HAVE APPLIED THE SUPERGOOP UNSEEN SUNSCREEN
I’ve only worn this under makeup as a protective primer. I take a generous dime size of the product, and apply it to all the high points of my face since they catch the sun first. Then I take any of the excess and rub it into the rest of my face.
The brand says to reapply every 2 hours, or after 40 minutes of swimming or intense sweating. But my question was – if you wear this under makeup how do you reapply it throughout the day without ruining what’s on top? Simple answer: you can’t, at least not with this texture. Supergoop suggests using their Defense Refresh Setting Mist, which you can buy alone or as a set with the Unseen Sunscreen.
I’ve never felt any consistency quite like this one before, either in makeup or skincare. It’s truly unique stuff. It’s completely smooth, applies in a flash, and has this gorgeous silky, velvety feel to it! The first time I used it I immediately thought to myself – now this is what a “modern” texture feels like. It’s completely clear, odorless and not sticky in the slightest unlike most mineral sunscreens.
SO DOES IT LAYER WELL UNDER MAKEUP?
Absolutely yes! It’s incredibly lightweight, and virtually disappears into the skin once gently rubbed in. I haven’t noticed my makeup bunching or pilling at all as I blend it over top of this primer. It also hasn’t broken me out or done anything weird to my skin, which is always a huge plus!
WOULD I RECOMMEND IT TO A FRIEND?
Yup! Given it’s ingredients and unique texture, I think this could definitely work on a variety of skin types. But just be aware, if you’re extremely diligent about your sun protection this will not protect you throughout the whole day. You will need to buy another product for reapplication, whether it be from Supergoop or another brand.
Lastly, you’re paying $32.00 for 50 ml of product; it’s significantly more expensive than a traditional drugstore mineral sunscreen, for example. But you’re paying for a unique texture that’s extremely easy-to-use, so again it completely depends on your priorities.
Have you used the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen before? I’d love to know!
