Hi friends!
If you haven’t guessed from the title, we’re going to be talking about the Ohii Beauty Wake Up Pen today. (If you’re not familiar with Ohii Beauty, make sure you read my brand overview post from September.) I picked this up in the shade Pearl from Urban Outfitters when I was shopping at the mall about a month ago and I’ve been using it off and on since then. It’s a funny little product. When I first read about it I really had no idea how to use it, but I was curious to try it nonetheless. So let’s get into it!
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
- $18.00, available in 2 shades, Pearl & Peach
- Formula is vegan, paraben-free, sulfate-free, cruelty-free
Weirdly, there doesn’t seem to be any official product description on Ohii’s site, so I hopped over to their Instagram (@ohiibeauty). If you click “Wake Up Pen” on their Instagram Story highlights, there’s lots of info there including all the quoted text below.
It’s a sheer under eye illuminator with brightening and color correcting properties for when your eyes need a little waking up. It can also double as a highlighter.
Peach shade – subtly color-correcting with natural glowy finish, sheer enough for all skin tones.
Pearl shade – reflective finish, makes skin appear brighter. Natural dewy finish that doesn’t stay tacky. Try it as a highlighter.
HOW TO OFFICIALLY USE THIS PRODUCT
Use the #ohii wake-up pen under your eyes to brighten or on your cheekbones to highlight!
Tip: try using it to “wake up” your under eye concealer after wearing it all day! Apply over the top for a late afternoon brightening boost.
HOW I USE THIS PRODUCT
For the most part I use this product as I would a cream highlighter, applied to the tops of my cheekbones and the bridge of my nose with my fingers or a beauty sponge. Recently I’ve also been applying it to my under-eye area before I put my concealer on, just to test the effect. I have not tried using it on top of my concealer yet, but I might in the future.
MY THOUGHTS ON…
Packaging: This is one of those click-up pens with a sponge tip applicator. I really like the packaging; it’s compact and it stays very clean with no mess. Lots of people think sponge tip applicators are dirty and unhygienic but I think it all depends on how you use them. Most of the time I don’t directly apply the applicator to my skin; I put the product onto the back of my hand and then tap it on the skin with my fingers or a sponge. I could see how if you applied the sponge tip directly onto the skin, over makeup, it would get dirty and gross-looking though.

Finish: So I got the shade Pearl which is, you guessed it, a pearly white shade. When I apply this onto my skin it sheers out very quickly and I’m left with a subtle sheen that has a very low-level of shimmer. Definitely not big flecks or anything obnoxious like that. After I tap it into my skin it does set after about 30 seconds to a minute, just as Ohii claims. It’s extremely lightweight as well, which is great.
Rating: 5/5 ⭐️
Longevity: The sheen/sparkle that this product offers definitely lasts all day. Some really subtle cream or liquid highlighters almost sink into your skin by the end of the day, so the effect vanishes. This doesn’t do that.
Rating: 5/5 ⭐️
Price: I’m not sure how much product you’re getting for $18.00. It doesn’t say on the pen itself, nor on the Ohii website. It probably was listed on the outer box, but I promptly tossed it after I photographed it. Oops! Although I do really like this product and have given it high marks across the board so far, I don’t necessarily think it’s worth $18.00. It just seems a little high for what it is. I know Ohii claims this is a multi-purpose product but to me this is just a cream highlighter. I’d love for this to be in the $10.00 – $15.00 range instead.

FINAL THOUGHTS
All in all, I think this is a nice product and I’m definitely getting use out of it as a cream highlighter. When I’ve applied this under my eyes under my concealer I haven’t really noticed much of a brightening effect, although I can see the low-level shimmer through my concealer throughout the day. To be honest I’m not sure how many people would want slightly-shimmery under-eyes! The whole under-the-eye-thing kinda confuses me about this product. Perhaps if you have really dark circles you might get more of a brightening effect. However if you want to use this as a subtle highlighter on the cheeks, or perhaps apply it under your foundation for a lit-from-within glow, it won’t disappoint. I just wish it was a bit cheaper, so I’m not sure if I would repurchase it.

Have you tried the Wake Up Pen yet, or anything else from Ohii Beauty? I’d love to know!

I like that it has the little sponge on the end. It seems like it would be less messy that way. I’m going to have to show this to my mom because she has recently started freaking out about the dark circles under her eyes. haha! Your posts always make me want to run to Ulta!
I kinda love the little sponge to be honest! I’d tell your mom to go for a true dark circle corrector, like Maybelline Age Rewind or Boiing Brightening Concealer from Benefit. I don’t see how the Wake Up Pen would actually correct darkness, although the peach shade claims it’s color-correcting so maybe she can try that one.
Ok, thanks! I will let her know. Some makeups break her out, but I think she can use Maybelline.
No problem!
You could probably use it as a little bit of highlighter in the inner corners of your eyes or right under your eyebrows…What a cool product!
Yes, you definitely could. I think because it’s in a pen you can pop it over any area of the face you want.
I need this one…thanks!
😉
I agree that it seems weird to have shimmery undereyes! But I can absolutely see how you would love this as a highlighter, that’s probably what I would do too. Great post!
Thanks so much!
Wow Erica, that looks very nice. I wish you could do a video about that. I love how it shines on your hand. It’s seem like very beautiful product.
Funny I thought about doing a video on this but there was so much info I wanted to talk about, I was afraid it would be too long! I’m trying to do short, snappy videos so people want to watch the whole thing.
Interesting product! It seems like it claims to do more than it does though. The packaging is definitely the best part. The “it’s for you” is too cute.
I love the packaging! Top marks!
