Hi friends!
If you missed my intro post, I’m spotlighting lipsticks all throughout the month of April. That is, both lipsticks that are new to my collection, and older ones that I want to try and rediscover. In the first installment, I shared my thoughts on the beautiful Bobbi Brown Crushed Lip Color, and last week I told you all about the Ilia Beauty Color Block Lipstick. In today’s post we’re delving into a sub-category of lipsticks that’s kinda gotten left behind in my collection – liquid lipsticks. More specifically the Kylie Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipstick, which people were going absolutely gaga over when her brand initially launched years ago.
This product has been gathering dust in my collection since about 2018…until now. I wanted to pose the following questions to myself: why don’t you reach for this product much anymore? And now that you’ve rediscovered it, will you continue to use it or declutter it?
Let’s get into it!
THE DEETS ON THE KYLIE COSMETICS MATTE LIQUID LIPSTICK
- Available in 36 shades – $17.00
The Matte Liquid Lipstick has high intensity pigment for an instant bold matte lip. The extremely long wearing lipstick contains moisturizing ingredients for a comfortable, emollient and silky feel that does not dry your lips out.

WHY HAVE I “FORGOTTEN” IT?
It’s quite simple: I just don’t reach for liquid lipsticks much anymore, especially matte ones. I used to be firmly of the mindset that if I was going to wear lipstick, I didn’t want it to move or fade throughout the day; so it had to be a matte and long-wearing formula. Hence, I was (initially) a big fan of the liquid lipstick craze. But time has passed, and I just don’t think that way anymore. I want moisture now, I want give on the lips, I want something that’s going to feel nourishing; and if it fades, well I’ll just reapply or let it be.
That being said, I find the matte formula on the Kylie Liquid Lipsticks to be extremely thin and weightless. I barely know it’s there throughout the day. It doesn’t feel “bad” or drying, it just feels like nothing. If I do ever go back to wearing liquid lipsticks again, I would want a formula like this one.
It is indeed very long-wearing, and lasted quite well throughout the day even through a light snack and drinking a few glasses of water (trying to get better about hydrating my body these days!). But after eating some pizza for dinner, there were a lot more signs of wear; all the lipstick from the sides of my mouth had worn off and I definitely had that “butthole” kinda look in the middle of my lips. You know the one! So you definitely need to reapply after a full meal.
I have the shade Posie K., which I believe is one of the original colors that Kylie launched with. It’s a beautiful pinky-berry shade that’s quite bold, especially for someone like me who nearly always wears nudes. It applies really easily with full pigment, but I found that it darkened quite a bit over time. By the end of the day it looked like I had applied a darker purple liner around my lips; it was bizarre!
(I should also mention that Posie K. really stains your lips even after you remove the color. It leaves behind a bright-pink-just-eaten-a-popsicle kinda look, which I don’t hate if I’m being honest.)

WILL I KEEP IT OR DECLUTTER IT?
I think I need to declutter this one. Even though the formula is quite good in my opinion as far as matte liquid lipsticks go (i.e. it’s not sticky or overly drying), I just don’t prefer these kinds of products anymore. I’m much more of a fan of sheer, moisturizing textures or soft matte lipsticks like the Ilia Beauty Color Block Lipstick, for instance. Beyond the formula, I didn’t like how the color oxidized and got darker throughout the day. That’s always annoying, isn’t it? When you buy a particular color, you want that color – not some different or darker version of it.
Have you tried the matte liquid lipsticks from Kylie Cosmetics? If so, what do you think? I’d love to know?
xo and be well, Erica
PIN IT!
I actually have Candy K, I agree with what you said about the formula, I barely wear liquid lipstick too anymore. I think mine is still not expired so I’ll keep it around for a bit longer.
Yea, my preferences have definitely changed over the years. I’d keep it around honestly because I think the formula is good, but I hate that the color changes throughout the day.
This is such a pretty colour! I don’t have dry lips but I’ve never been a fan of matte liquid lipsticks. I don’t know much about Kylie Cosmetics, do they do non-matte liquid lipsticks?
It is a beautiful color, so it’s totally a shame that it oxidizes throughout the day! Yes, I believe she also does Velvet Liquid Lipsticks too (which does sound very appealing to me!).
Ooh I might look the velvet ones up, thanks for that!
No problem!
The butthole lip thing cracked me up!! I know exactly what you’re talking about! 😂😂 It is a really pretty color!
Ha! There’s nothing worse, am I right?!
Yes!!! 😂😂
I have never tried any of the Kylie liquid lipsticks, but I’d love to as they sound so lovely! This is a really pretty shade xo

The formula is quite good, and like I said in the post, this is the kind of liquid lipstick I go for – thin, weightless and not drying. Love this color too, but I wish it just stayed that shade the whole day!
Although I love the color, I prefer not using a matte lipstick
This one isn’t matte at all. It’s kinda like a colored lip balm – very sheer and shiny!
Well heck that is right up my alley then!
I never gave this brand a shot, especially when the lipstick formula always had mixed reviews but your review is very positive and the formula sounds quite nice. It’s a gorgeous shade and it looks amazing on you. The finish almost looks like the ultra blotted lip I have from colourpop
I heard a lot of mixed things about the liquid lipstick formula over the years as well, but I think the formula is quite nice considering. The shade is beautiful, I just wish it stayed that shade all day and didn’t oxidize! I know she also has a velvet lipstick formula available for most colors in the line, which sounds very intriguing.
i wouldn’t be cool with my lipstick oxidizing either, and honesty, that is kind of unheard of when it comes to lipsticks, i don’t think i’ve ever come across any lippies like that
This was my first experience like this as well so I was a bit 😒…
Totally see why you decluttered it! Definitely bizarre how it gets darker after awhile. This shade is gorgeous on you though!
Thank you! Yea, I definitely parted ways with this one; the color just got wayyy too dark the longer I wore it. I’ve heard that happening with some liquid lip formulas.
