September’s almost over but not before I bring you the last installment in this month’s content series – hot beauty news! If you’d like to catch up on all the relevant posts (and I hope you do), I’ve linked them below for your convenience.
Today we’re talking about what’s trending on Instagram – actually it’s also trending on the runways and on the red carpet too, apparently. I’m talking about Euphoria inspired makeup looks! If you haven’t yet watched or even heard of this year’s hottest TV show, consider this your wakeup call.
Euphoria finished its first season run on HBO over the summer, and boy did it make waves! It’s probably the most raw, uncensored, uninhibited look at modern adolescence I’ve ever seen – it’s definitely not for everyone. Like, this goes way further on mental health, sex, violence, drug addiction and social media than even 13 Reasons Why goes; you get the picture. Honestly I have very mixed feelings about the show being so unedited, but I can’t argue that it’s compelling material.
Besides the edgy content, there’s nothing but big love and admiration going around on social media for all the amazing makeup looks that lead MUA Doniella Davy and her team created on the show’s characters. In this post I’ve included a few stills from her Instagram, but there are so many other great looks on there so I really recommend checking out her account to see much more.
It’s all about the glitter, the sequins, the bold shapes and interesting color combinations. This is not your standard go-to-work, go-to-school, no-makeup makeup. It’s quite theatrical, obviously, but you can easily adapt certain looks to be more wearable IRL. In fact this was really the point according Doniella, quoted from an Into the Gloss article below:
In Euphoria, Doniella uses makeup as a window to how the characters are feeling. “Makeup is emotionally evocative,” she told me, “and can express irony, playfulness, rebelliousness, joy, fearlessness, disorder, vulnerability, wanting to be loved, not wanting to be loved, delirium, elation, heartbreak, confusion, rebirth, surrealism, wonder, anxiety, and euphoria of course.” The expressiveness reminded me how intense feelings are when you’re a teen—years later, they still seem so vivid. “I wanted to create a euphoric version of reality through makeup,” Doniella said, “and use colors and textures that would be bold enough to hover above reality. I wanted to inspire people to recreate their own versions of the looks or try things they didn’t feel were allowed or appropriate for everyday.”
EUPHORIA INSPIRED MAKEUP ON INSTAGRAM
If you search #euphoriamakeup on Instagram thousands and thousands of images will pop up. Nothing but brights, sparkly things, dramatic cut-creases and sharp winged liner. It’s very cool to see so many people create so many different looks, all inspired from a single source. I’ve only included a mere few here from some popular makeup artists and influencers.
Have you watched Euphoria yet? What do you think of all these inspired looks? I’d love to know!
